Today 11 March, is anniversary of the restoration of Lithuanian Independence, restored on this day in 1990 The dreams of an Independent Medieval Lithuania eventually compromised into a Polish - Lithuanian Commonwealth, no bad thing as Lithuania retained much Independence and sovereignty. However it lost this Independence in 1795 as the Commonwealth was dissolved and it's lands partitioned by surrounding countries. On 16 February 1918 Lithuania declared it's Independence but there followed years of conflict and power struggles with Poland, Germany and Russia, the history of which is too complex to discuss here (see web info). Following World War II Lithuania was annexed by the Soviet Union but in time the decline of Communism in the Soviet Union led to Lithuania proclaiming the restoration of it's Independence, recognising the 16 February as it's restored Independence Day. Russia refused to recognise Lithuanian Independence, and an Independence struggle continued which finally forced the Russians in September 1991 to recognise Lithuanian Sovereignty and Independence. The Russians finally withdrew from Lithuania in 1993, since which Lithuania has become a thriving Sovereign Nation, one of three Baltic Nations that have won their freedom by the closing decade of the 20th century.

How much longer must we in Wales wait for the restoration of our Independence, yes I said restored Independence, that which was won by Owain Glyndwr by 1404, after four years of armed struggle that had began on 16 Medi 1400. For in Machynlleth on 21 Mehefin 1404 with the establishment of Senedd Glyndwr - Senedd Cenedl Cymru Rydd was not Welsh Independence lost in 1282 finally recovered and re-established. This is food for thought, maybe we should mark 21 Mehefin as Welsh Independence Day, then when we restore it, we may actually make it official as the Lithuanians did on the 11 March 1990. Whatever, see below suggestion re commemorating and celebrating Cenedl Glyndwr - Cenedl Cymru Rydd - as Welsh Independence Day 21 Mehefin 1404, that's a suggestion only. Embassy Glyndwr organised major events on this day on it's 600th anniversary 2004 but nothing has been organised since, I note that Embassy Glyndwr is encouraging the Town Council and Canolfan Glyndwr to organise some thing annually to no avail up to now. Embassy Glyndwr organises its own event at Cefn Caer but there is no reason why other organisations cannot organise their own events and activities, as I have suggested re an annual ''Sovereignty Session'' around Cofeb Glyndwr at Y Plas, Machynlleth. If anything happens in this direction I will post up Information in this blog.
